"SEO? We tried that. It doesn’t work"

That was the reply I received when I told someone recently what I do for a living. They run an online business selling kitchen supplies and had tried doing SEO themselves, only to watch it fizzle out.

They were partly correct. SEO doesn't work… if you don't know how to do it properly.

The real issue? Many companies expect SEO to be a quick fix that brings thousands of visitors to their website with little effort. They install an "SEO plugin," throw some keywords on a page, cross their fingers, and expect Google to rank them on page one. That might have worked in the early days of SEO, but now, when you're up against millions of other pages, it’s not that simple.

It's frustrating, isn’t it? Let’s clear things up and look at what SEO really is, why it matters, and how you can make it work for your business.

    What is search engine optimisation?

Improving your website so it ranks better in search results is known as SEO (search engine optimisation). Think of it as making your shop window more appealing so that more people stop and look in.

    SEO has three main parts:

    On-page SEO

This includes everything you do on your website to improve its searchability.

    • Using keywords your audience is searching for

    • Writing useful, engaging content

    • Optimising titles, headings, and meta descriptions

    • Checking site speed and mobile-friendliness

    Technical SEO

This focuses on making sure your site runs smoothly. Think of it as the foundation of a house.

    • Fixing broken links and errors that affect crawling

    • Creating a sitemap so search engines can index your pages

    • Making sure your site is secure (using HTTPS)

    Off-page SEO

This includes things you do away from your site to make it rank better. You might think of this as establishing your website's credibility.

    • Obtaining links back to your website from reputable sources.

    • Interacting on social media and in industry forums

    • Managing online reviews and brand mentions

These three areas are essential to your SEO strategy. An effective SEO campaign requires a balance. It’s one thing to focus on one area, but if you neglect the others, you won’t get the results you want.

On-page SEO is what makes your content relevant to the kinds of queries people enter into search engines.

Technical SEO ensures that search engines can easily crawl and index your pages. Your site may not have the authority needed to compete in search rankings without off-page SEO.

The combined implementation of all three elements is where success comes from.

    Why use SEO?

Imagine your website as a shop in the middle of a desert. SEO builds roads and puts up signs so people can find you.

    SEO matters because it:

    • Increases visibility - Over 90% of online experiences start with a search engine. If your website isn’t there, you're missing potential customers.
    • Helps build brand credibility - People trust search engines. A highly ranked website is more likely to be trusted.
    • Brings relevant traffic - People searching for what you offer can find you.
    • Provide cost-effective marketing - Unlike paid ads, SEO traffic doesn’t stop when you stop paying.

SEO isn’t magic, but when done right, it’s one of the best ways to grow your business online.

    Is SEO still relevant?

Yes. Search engines keep evolving, but their goal remains the same: to provide users with the best, most relevant answers. If people are searching for what you offer, SEO is still the best way to get more visitors unless you have a big budget for Google Ads.

Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day.

15% of daily searches are brand new phrases that have never been searched before.

Whilst the basics of SEO have remained the same, voice search and AI have changed how people search. It's still all about knowing your audience and creating content that satisfies what they want and need.

Why SEO might not have worked for you

If you’ve tried SEO and been disappointed, you’re not alone. Many companies put time or money into SEO and see no return on their investment for several reasons.

    DIY without a plan

Many businesses believe that SEO is easy and involves stuffing keywords onto a page and waiting for the visitors to arrive. But for businesses that are serious about driving qualified traffic, a clear SEO strategy is essential.

    • Using random keywords - Some businesses either guess or focus on terms that don't drive the right audience, instead of targeting relevant, high-intent keywords.

    • A content strategy that lacks consistency - Publishing blog posts or refreshing web pages without regard for what users actually search for or the intent behind those searches.

    • Neglecting technical SEO - Issues such as slow load times, poor mobile performance, and broken links can keep search engines from accurately indexing and ranking your pages.

SEO work can often feel like a shot in the dark, producing little to no return on investment.

    Relying on plugins alone

Useful recommendations come from SEO plugins like Yoast or Rank Math. However, they are often misconceived as a complete SEO solution. Businesses that depend only on these tools overlook important factors of SEO that plugins cannot handle.

    • Surface-level optimisation - Plugins assist with metadata and readability; however, they do not manage deeper problems such as site architecture, content strategy, or backlinks.

    • Generic recommendations - Often, automated recommendations do not carry the context of competition that is specific to their industry or the nature of user behaviour.

    • No impact on authority - A website's credibility is the main factor affecting its search rankings, and this comes from well-produced backlinks, mention of the brand, and trust in the website's content things that plugins can't generate.

Businesses that expect a plugin to "fix" SEO frequently discover that their rankings remain static because they aren't focusing on the larger issue.

    Cheap, low-quality services

Some companies want cheap SEO services that guarantee fast outcomes. These services usually employ outdated or manipulative tactics that offer no real value and can even seriously damage a company's online reputation over the long term.

    • Spammy backlinks - Buying links from unrelated or poor-quality websites can result in Google penalties instead of better rankings.

    • Keyword stuffing - Stuffing pages with keywords makes them unreadable and can cause them to get a low value in search results.

    • Duplicate or low-value content - Certain services produce a never-ending supply of the same recycled content that fails to rank or engage users.

    • Automated SEO tactics - Creating backlinks, spinning content, and manipulating search rankings with bots usually brings about a temporary, short-term pay-off. After a while, those working with bots suffer penalties sometimes severe penalties that undermine their site's reputation and visibility.

These shortcuts can result in ranking drops, loss of trustworthiness, and sometimes even a Google penalty, which makes it much harder to come back.

    SEO is like plumbing

Doing your SEO yourself is like trying to fix a major plumbing problem on your own. You might manage to mend a small leak, but without the kind of know-how and tools that a professional possesses, you could easily make the situation worse.

A professional plumber sorts through your piping to finds the source of the trouble; applies the fix that best solves the immediate problem, as well as any related issues, like low water pressure; and ensures that everything is running smoothly before they leave.

In the same way, a search engine optimisation professional understands search engine algorithms, website optimisation, and content strategy. These experts can help your business rank higher and attract more visitors. Hiring one to do the work for you saves time, prevents costly mistakes, and delivers better results over the long run.

The right way to approach SEO

If SEO has not previously worked for you, it doesn't mean it will never work-it just means the correct approach wasn't taken. A concrete SEO strategy should include:

A clear roadmap - Setting goals and tracking progress over time.

Comprehensive keyword research - Understanding what your target audience is seeking.

High-quality content - Providing value, not just stuffing in keywords.

Technical optimisation - Fixing slow load times, mobile issues, and broken links.

Sustainable link building - Earning quality backlinks through trusted sources.

When done right, SEO is one of the most effective and efficient means of establishing your online presence and drawing customers to your website. But it is not a means to an end, and certainly not an "instant fix."

How to make SEO work for your business

If you're ready to give SEO another go, here are some steps to get better results:

Understand your audience - Find out what your potential customers are searching for. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner or Answer the Public to discover keywords.

Create valuable content - Your blog posts, guides, and videos should answer your audience’s questions. Focus on quality, not quantity.

Optimise your site - Write clear, persuasive titles and headings, and compress images to improve site speed. ensure your site looks good and works well on mobile devices.

Build connections - Reach out to other businesses or bloggers in your industry. Guest posting and partnerships can help you earn valuable backlinks.

Monitor your progress - Use Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track what’s working and adjust your strategy accordingly.

    Time to take action

Doing SEO properly takes knowledge, time, strategy, and effort. Done right, it can make a business succeed online by bringing in steady traffic, leads, and sales. Done wrong, it can cause a business to fail without visitors, there are no leads or sales, and a website becomes nothing more than a digital ghost town.
